There is also a lot to discover in the areas surrounding Wilhelmshaven. It is worth taking a day trip to Dangast and Varel, for example. Dangast is a spa town boasting a wonderful esplanade for taking long strolls and a sandy beach to relax on. Its idyllic location and the clear colours and light of the north have stimulated artists from all over Germany since the beginning of the 20th century. Even today, artists are drawn to the small village. The coastal villages of Hooksiel, Horumersiel and Schillig have kilometre-long sandy beaches. Kite surfers are provided with optimum conditions and Hooksiel even has an inviting beach sauna to encourage relaxation. The town of Jever is well-known for its beer of the same name. It is possible to visit the brewery. Its town centre encourages sauntering, window-shopping and enjoying a coffee; the castle is always worth a visit as is a walk through the castle gardens.
